What we do

Each session is designed to keep kids safe, engaged, and active:

  • School ends and Backyard Rule students are sent to meet their coach (usually in the cafeteria), who takes role and informs the school of any absent students

  • Pow-wow: a short group discussion encouraging sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play, etc.

  • Warm-up: footwork, stretching, and partner drills

  • Group drills: hitting, fielding, and throwing drills in small group rotations

  • Tournament: form teams and play

What to Bring

Students do not need to bring any gloves, bats, helmets, or other equipment of their own. All bats, balls, and training equipment are provided by Backyard Rule and are made of soft/lightweight material. Students should bring/wear:

  • A refillable water bottle

  • Closed toed gym shoes: please no sandals or heels

  • Weather appropriate athletic clothes (shorts, tee-shirt, etc.)

Pickup & Dismissal

When our program ends students are either walked back to their teacher or are walked to the parent pickup line to be released to a parent, guardian, or other individual listed on their authorized pickup list.

  • Your authorized pickup list can be updated by emailing nate@backyardrule.com

  • Please drive safely, especially when on school grounds

  • If you are running late do not rush, simply inform the school or Backyard Rule of your ETA

Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to review our program! In 2015 I launched Backyard Rule with the goal of sharing my love for the game with others. I am so thankful for the incredible support this community has shown us with their participation in our summer camps, after-school programs, and other events.

I believe our value goes far beyond teaching fundamental skills. Encouraging a child to get back up and try again, recognizing sportsmanship and fair play, and fostering a healthy attitude are at the core of Backyard Rule. Yes, your student will learn how to throw, hit, and catch, but the real takeaway from this program can be summed up in one word: FUN!

I’m very proud that our program has earned a reputation for being welcoming and inclusive for all types of players, from beginners to advanced. We strive to strike a balance between healthy competition and a true developmental experience, rather than a win-at-all-costs mindset. We believe the best kind of victory is an undisputed one—earned honestly, without the need to argue or bend the rules. These are the kinds of lessons we aim to teach our participants at a young age, helping to build a strong foundation of character as they grow into young adulthood.
