Boys and girls ages 6 - 14 are invited to join us for our 12th year of summer camp from Monday - Thursday, 9:00 am - 3 pm in St. Augustine, FL at St. Joseph Academy High School Softball (1081 South Whitney Street St. Augustine, FL 32084). Full days from 9 am - 3:00 pm or half days from 9 am - noon are available!
Our camp objective is to teach fundamental Baseball/Softball skills in a safe, fun, and inclusive atmosphere. We play various games such as Wiffle ball, Kickball, Tag, and more. Although many of our games appear goofy and chaotic, we are teaching hand-eye coordination, footwork, throwing mechanics, and other athletic movements. The biggest lesson that we hope campers take away from camp is how to overcome failure. Give your best effort, resist blaming, and get up to try again!
Our camp makes for a perfect introduction to the game for youngsters, and is also a skill sharpening opportunity for more seasoned ballplayers. All bats and balls are soft and are provided by Backyard Rule. Campers do not need to bring any bats, gloves, or other gear of their own. They should bring a refillable water bottle, a snack/lunch, and a small bag for their belongings. No need to wear baseball pants or cleats. Dress in shorts, a shirt, a hat, and closed toed gym shoes.

I graduated from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida in 2012, where I spent four years playing the game I love and walked away with far more than wins and losses—lifelong friendships, invaluable mentors, and lessons that continue to shape who I am today.
When my playing days came to an end, I founded Backyard Rule with a simple goal: to share my love for the game and inspire others to play.
You don’t need to become a Major League ballplayer or earn a full scholarship to benefit from sports. The real value lies in learning how to dust yourself off, try again, and compete with purpose. That resilience—developed on the field—translates to every area of life.
One of my core goals with this program is to teach a wide variety of drills and backyard-style games that kids can take home, play on their own, and pass down for generations. Today, those traditions are threatened by increased screen time, video games, and instant dopamine at our fingertips. Could there ever be a time when games like wiffle ball, kickball, tag, and pickup games are forgotten? Not on my watch!
While our games naturally build hand-eye coordination, footwork, and athletic confidence, the bigger—and more important—challenge is teaching sportsmanship, teamwork, and character. Learning how to disagree, work through conflict, and keep playing is just as valuable as any drill we run. At Backyard Rule, our coaches and instructors take ownership of that responsibility—and we strive to model it ourselves every day.

“Backyard Rule keeps our son engaged for the entirety of the camp. Fun and friendship are easily found at this well organized, fun, energetic and kindly competitive camp. Hustle and effort are rewarded with wiffle ball victories that will keep you coming back year after year! Definitely our son’s favorite summer camp.”
“This is by far my boys favorite camp of the summer! It’s our second year! The “big boys” are always so sweet to my littlest boy who they have nick-named “little man”! They look forward to this camp and are always so sad when it’s over! :)”
“Wanted to let you know my daughter is having a great time and learning so much. This might have been the best camp for her. She is going to try softball this year and I have her signed up for softball night camp in July. Your camp was the perfect start for her. Just wanted to say thank you and your camp is amazing! ”
“**** and **** enjoy this camp every year and always look forward to it! Thank you for all the work and for creating all the fun and memories for them! I hope that **** can be a counselor next summer (he’ll be 12 on Saturday!) and we look forward to the next few summers with Backyard Rule!”
