The Backyard Rule after-school program is currently in session at Osceola Elementary on Wednesdays from 1:45 - 3:15 pm. Registration is still open to boys and girls grades 1st - 5th and kindergarteners can join if they attend class with an older sibling (age requirements can vary based on your school). Registration is per student, so please increase your purchase quantity to match.

Hello Osceola Elementary, we’re so thrilled you are considering joining our program!

Our course objective is to teach fundamental skills for Baseball and Softball in a safe, fun, and inclusive atmosphere while also emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and character. Enrollment is open to students grades 1st - 5th. Kindergarteners can join if they have an older sibling enrolled in class.

We provide the bats, balls, and other playing equipment, all of which is made of lightweight or soft material. Students don’t need any bats, gloves or other equipment of their own, but they should dress in weather appropriate athletic clothes, wear closed toed gym shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle.

Registration is available by the 8-week quarter for $250. Discounted registration is offered if:

1) You are registering for multiple quarters (10% off)

2) You are registering multiple students/siblings (20% off second student)

3) You are a SJCSD employee (20% off)

4) You are registering mid-session (prorated based on remaining classes at 31.25/class)

Meet Coach Nate

After a childhood spent fielding ground balls and playing Wiffle ball in the backyard, I left Cincinnati, OH to play Baseball 800 miles away at Flagler College. Upon graduating, I launched Backyard Rule with the goal of sharing my love for the game and inspiring others to play.

I feel so lucky to have had great coaches when I was young. Very few of them had extensive Baseball backgrounds or pro-level credentials, but they made it fun and cared for their us dearly.

I am a huge supporter of sports, Baseball and Softball especially. A difficult lesson we all learn is just because you want something and work hard for it, success is not guaranteed. We can only control our attitude and effort.

I never was a big stat guy, but here is one for you: about 7% of high school players go on to play in college and less than 1% receive full-ride scholarships. Even fewer go on to play pro, and of those that do, a small fraction of them are paid millions.

On the bright side, 100% (or at least 98%) of those who play sports are physical active, learning new skills, and have to overcome failure. You don’t have to be the next big thing, just get out there and play! Fall down, get up. Scrape a knee, walk it off. Get in a dispute, work it out!

Over the course of 10+ years Backyard Rule has developed a unique sports culture that blends a competitive spirit with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. This is largely thanks to the many kids and parents who's participation has helped to shape our reputation. Some of them were advanced athletes involved in other travel sports, but just as many have been the opposite, completely out of their comfort zone and trying something new. All are welcome and all can benefit in some way from their experience.
